Worker justice and education policy were added to the timeline to build awareness of Florida's policy past and share lessons of cross-racial solidarity. Explore more at FloridaTimeline.org
At FPI, we Pursue Equity by advancing policies that dismantle the systemic barriers to opportunity historically upheld by public officials, laws, and practices. We live out this core value by operating with a lens of equity and inclusion, publishing policy research that disaggregates data by race and ethnicity, and advocating for policy recommendations that reduce harmful racial and ethnic disparities.
When we come together across our differences to create laws and policies for racial equity, we see a shared, positive impact for all Floridians. To do this, we must learn about our shared past, including the history of discriminatory laws and policies that have limited the ability to thrive for many Floridians, particularly for Floridians of color. The Florida Timeline is an ongoing initiative to draw awareness to the systemic racism that has permeated historical laws in Florida and continues to reverberate in modern-day policy.
The timeline initiative launched with key historical information from criminal justice and tax policy. In 2023, worker justice and education policy were added to the timeline. Over many years, the timeline will be continuously updated and expanded to include more information and more policy topics such as safety net programs, social control, housing, voting rights, immigrant justice, and more.
By learning about our past, we give ourselves the knowledge we need to shape a better future – one in which every Floridian, of every race in every corner of our state, can reach their full potential.
