Floridians in Every County Rely on Safety Net Programs That Are at Risk in Federal Budget Negotiations

Proposals advancing in Congress to cut over $1 trillion in funding for critical health, nutrition, education, and environmental programs could have significant consequences for Floridians, who are already struggling to afford the basics in the face of persistently high inflation and the high cost of living.

With millions relying on Medicaid, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, and other essential services, these cuts could threaten health care access, increase food insecurity, and strain local economies. From seniors and children to working families, the impacts would be felt across the state. These cuts would increase poverty and hardship, widen racial and ethnic inequities, and make it harder for workers to maintain their jobs.

The tool below shows how many residents in each of Florida’s counties benefit from the Advance Premium Tax Credit, SNAP, Medicaid, and free- and reduced-price school lunch. All four of these vital programs are at risk for cuts, which would have wide-reaching impacts in communities across the Sunshine State.
