FPI Says That Ending Tuition Fairness Would be a Costly Mistake

STATEWIDE, Fla. - Allowing Florida’s Dreamers to access in-state tuition has not cost the state money, and in fact has generated millions in revenue for higher education institutions, according to the non-partisan Florida Policy Institute (FPI).

In a new blog post, FPI explains that if Florida were to eliminate out-of-state fee waivers for undocumented students, as proposed under SB 90 and SB 244, "Florida’s institutions, as a whole, could lose out on nearly $15 million in tuition and fees, plus additional losses from locking Dreamers out of economic opportunity and Florida’s economy losing skilled labor."

"Tuition fairness benefits everyone — the state, our higher education institutions, and Florida families, both documented and undocumented," said Sadaf Knight, CEO of FPI. "If the Florida Legislature values fostering economic opportunity and attracting business and capital to our state, they will reject Senate Bills 90 and 244."FPI is an independent, nonpartisan and nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing state policies and budgets that improve the economic mobility and quality of life for all Floridians.
