Statement on CMS Approving Florida’s KidCare Expansion Waiver

We applaud CMS and the Biden Administration’s decision to approve Florida’s CHIP waiver application to expand KidCare. I

In 2023 the Florida Legislature — by unanimous votes in both the House and Senate — approved a measure to increase children’s access to health care coverage by expanding the state’s KidCare program.

Unfortunately, families in Florida have faced a year of delay implementing the KidCare expansion. Florida leaders should accept the terms to this waiver approval, including preserving 12 months of continuous health care coverage for children, no matter what. This CHIP expansion approval comes on the heels of the Medicaid redetermination process, during which 532,078 children in Florida lost Medicaid coverage. Approval of CHIP expansion in Florida will be lifesaving and life-changing for thousands of families — the state of Florida should waste no time in accepting the terms of the federal waiver approval.

Florida Health Justice Project Executive Director Alison Yager said:

"This is truly welcome news for tens of thousands of children in Florida, especially those with medically complex conditions who have been going without the healthcare coverage they need due to Florida's delay in implementing the expansion. Florida must now show it is serious about serving working families by implementing the expansion immediately."
