Testimony on SB 918 Before the Florida Senate Commerce and Tourism Committee

The remarks below were provided during the Florida Senate Commerce and Tourism Committee meeting on Senate Bill (SB) 918, legislation that would further erode child labor protections in Florida.

This bill not only allows employers to schedule all 16- and 17-year olds for unlimited hours, overnight, and without breaks — but also targets kids as young as 14.

For most, that means they’re in their first year of high school. We don’t let kids this young get a driver’s license and we’re worried about their social media consumption, so why are we OK treating them like they’re adults just because they’re home- or virtual-schooled?

I’ve heard this is about parents and choice. Where in the bill does it say parental rights have to be secured before employers can overwork these teens?

Our analysis shows there are over 110,000 teens under 18 in Florida's labor force, over 95,000 of whom are currently employed — so most teens looking for work have it already. And 72 percent are currently juggling work and school.

Meanwhile, Florida’s absenteeism rates are soaring at their second-highest levels in 15 years.

So, we urge you to vote no on SB 918.
