Florida Policy Institute (FPI) and Florida Health Justice Project (FHJP) are hosting a webinar to provide updates on the state of children’s health coverage in Florida and outlook for the months ahead.

During the webinar, Joan Alker, executive director and co-founder of the Georgetown University Center for Children and Families, along with speakers from FPI and FHJP will discuss the following:

  • Florida has disenrolled children from KidCare in violation of a federal law that prohibits the state from terminating coverage for nonpayment of premiums during a 12-month continuous eligibility period. A federal judge dismissed the state’s legal challenge; however, disenrollments have continued despite the legal decision.
  • While state lawmakers passed legislation in 2021 extending postpartum Medicaid coverage to 12 months, since as far back as April 2023, the state has stripped 12 months of postpartum Medicaid coverage from new mothers after just two months.
  • The expansion of Florida KidCare, passed in 2023, has yet to be implemented. This means that thousands of children in families with low income who are eligible for KidCare are either losing their coverage or unable to enroll.
  • Florida has one of the highest rates of uninsured children in the nation. During the Medicaid unwinding, the state disenrolled the second largest number of children in the country.

The groups will provide space for questions toward the end of the webinar.
